IJSC Garmin upgrade enables altitude pre-select function on Bendix M4D autopilots.

Garmin UpgradesIntercontinental Jet Service Corp. successfully completed the first Garmin G600, GNS 650/750 installation in a MU-2 with an altitude pre-select function utilizing the Bendix M4D autopilot system.  This avionics package was installed in MU-2B-26A, SN319.  The aircraft is owned and operated by Chris Saxton of Pace Inc. based in Flint, Michigan.

“One of the most frequent requests IJSC receives is for the installation of a new autopilot system that would provide, among other things, an “altitude pre-select” function, for aircraft presently operating with the Bendix M4D autopilot system” notes Director of Operations, Mark James. Since the new autopilot system is not available yet, a decision was made to provide operators the altitude pre-select function on their existing Bendix autopilot system.

To utilize this pre-select function, the aircraft must be equipped with the Garmin G600 and some form of Garmin Nav capability.  The system installed in this airplane worked flawlessly during ground testing. During flight test the pilot set the desired altitude on the G600. When the airplane reached the desired altitude, the M4D altitude hold function automatically engaged.

“This installation and the altitude pre-select mod exceeded our expectations” said IJSC Avionics Manager, Michael Bilby.  “In addition to the overall aesthetics of the installation and the success of the altitude preselect, we were able to reduce the aircraft empty weight by more than 250 pounds by removing unused wiring, equipment and racks.”

“The next scheduled IJSC avionics installation is the same G600, GNS 650/750 combination on a Sperry equipped MU-2B-60. We will be attempting to enhance the operation of the Sperry autopilot system also” said Mark James.

Intercontinental Jet Service Corporation (IJSC), located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a factory owned MU-2 Service Center, a  subsidiary of MHIA. IJSC provides aircraft service and repair on turboprop and light jet aircraft. They also provide major avionics upgrades and Major Level TPE331 service, authorized by Honeywell. MHIA’s Aircraft Product Support Division provides ongoing support including parts, publications, service engineering, etc. for more than 300 MU-2 aircraft operating in North America.

Grace on Wings selects Intercontinental Jet Service Corp’s
TPE331-10AV engine conversion for their MU-2

Intercontinental Jet Service Corp. of Tulsa, Oklahoma announced that Grace on Wings has selected the installation of the TPE331 DASH 10AV engine upgrade on their MU-2. Grace on Wings operates the only Charity Air Ambulance service in the U S from their base in Indianapolis, Indiana. During the past three years they have operated 131 missions carrying non-ambulatory patients all over the United States. “Based on three years of operational experience we are convinced we selected the right airplane for our missions when we selected the MU-2. Considering all the options for engine overhaul, Grace on Wings selected the Dash 10s. The improved safety margins provided by the improved performance, lower major maintenance costs and reduction in fuel consumption were all convincing reasons in selecting the DASH 10AV engines” said Hal Blank, Chief Pilot for Grace on Wings.

Grace on Wings is a charitable organization that depends on donations from the public for their operations. In a unique business arrangement StandardAero, Intercontinental Jet Service Corp, and Honeywell have all partnered together to assist Grace on Wings in making this engine upgrade a reality. “We are pleased to partner with these companies and Grace on Wings to do a small part in providing a service that impact people’s lives in a very positive way”, said Dennis Braner President of IJSC.

The engines are presently being overhauled and converted to DASH 10AVs by the exclusive Honeywell DASH 10 conversion company, StandardAero in Augusta, Georgia. When the engine conversion is completed, the engines will be installed on the Grace on Wings MU-2 by Intercontinental Jet Service Corp in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Intercontinental Jet Service Corp is the exclusive installation facility for the DASH10T and DASH10AV engine which is available for the earlier model MU-2s.
