MU-2 Limited Edition™ Project Update

The first MU2 Limited Edition project has entered the Final Phase of a Five Phase process. A MU2B-26A, SN351SA is being renovated from the radome to the tail cone and from the tires to the vertical tail rotating beacon.

MU-2 Limited Edition

Phase One of the project included the complete disassembly of the aircraft. The wings, landing gear, horizontal stabilizer and interior were all removed. The props were sent to Hartzell for overhaul and the engines were routed to Standard Aero for Dash 10 modification and overhaul. Other system components were sent out for overhaul as required.

Phase Two included the complete inspection of the aircraft systems and structure. All discrepancies requiring repairs were addressed.  Areas requiring new corrosion resistant treatment were cleaned, primed and / or painted as required.

Phase Three included the installation of new parts and the reinstallation of the overhauled components. This aircraft project includes the incorporation of seventeen (17) Service Bulletins and numerous new parts. This Phase also included the installation of a new acoustic / insulation package from Aerocon.

Phase Four included testing of all aircraft systems. The initial post inspection ground testing was completed. The First Test Flight was completed April 1, 2009. The aircraft performed extremely well. Captain Rick Wheldon and Co-Pilot Tim Coons operated the aircraft up to flight level 200 at True Air Speeds of 315 knots. The airplane has now completed a total of nineteen (19) flights, performing testing of all aircraft systems and the new SAGEM Integrated Cockpit Display System.

Phase Five has included the stripping of the old exterior paint, metal prep, etch, alodine and application of a corrosive resistant primer. The newly designed Limited Edition paint scheme was applied by Ranger Aviation. The final segment of Phase Five will be completed when Ranger installs the completely refurbished interior, covers the new light weight interior panels, and the newly designed cabin table.

This Limited Edition will be equipped with the SAGEM Integrated Cockpit Display System which will include Dual 8.4 inch flat – panel  Primary Flight Displays and a 10.4 inch flat – panel  Multi-Function Display displaying engine indications, weather and traffic.  The system is a new STC for the MU-2 and is being certified on this aircraft.

When the first MU2 Limited Edition is completed later this year it will be one of the fastest and most efficient twin turbo-props in its price class.
